The First Annual Tommy’s: Winners

And the time has come to reveal the winners at the First Annual Tommy’s! The moment you’ve all been waiting for? I’m sure that’s the case.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role –

Anthony Carrigan as NoHo Hank in Barry

Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Richie Jerimovich in The Bear WINNER

Jon Hamm as Roy Tillman in Fargo

Matthew MacFadyen as Tom Wambsgans in Succession

Alan Ruck as Connor Roy in Succession

It was hard not to give it to a Succession performer here, with both these men putting in among their best performances in the show’s run. That said, the weight of Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s task in the second season of The Bear cannot be understated. In season one, Richie was largely unlikable and annoying so his turnaround in the second season into becoming a fan favourite character exemplified in his spotlight episode ‘Forks’ was a joy to watch.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role –

Sarah Goldberg as Sally Reed in Barry

Ayo Edebiri as Sydney Adamu in The Bear

Jamie Lee Curtis as Donna Berzatto in The Bear WINNER

Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca Welton in Ted Lasso

Lena Headey as Dorothy Hunt in White House Plumbers

Though her Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All At Once was very controversial, I don’t think many people will have too much of an issue here. As soon as you see Donna for the first time, it becomes more clear why Carmy has ended up the way he has. Curtis puts in what I consider a career-best performance and dazzles in every moment she’s on screen as an unstable and emotionally intense mother. Two for two for The Bear.

Best Actor in a Leading Role –

Jason Isaacs as Cary Grant in Archie

Jeremy Allen White as Carmy Berzatto in The Bear

Pedro Pascal as Joel in The Last of Us

Kieran Culkin as Roman Roy in Succession WINNER

Jeremy Strong as Kendall Roy in Succession

A first win for Succession and one that does match up with how the awards shows have been leaning. While I think Jeremy Strong consistently gave the best performance on the show, Kieran Culkin really came into his own in the show’s final season. Roman is given more depth and weighty material than ever and Culkin’s performance is consistently moving. Much like Richie, the eventuality that Roman Roy ends up as more grounded and sensible than his siblings is almost miraculous.

Best Actress in a Leading Role –

Vinette Robinson as Carly in Boiling Point

Juno Temple as Dot Lyon in Fargo

Bella Ramsey as Ellie in The Last of Us

Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale in Poker Face

Sarah Snook as Shiv Roy in Succession WINNER

Both the leading acting honours go to Succession, and again you could argue that the show’s final season is Sarah Snook’s best ever portrayal of Shiv. All of the central cast are able to express so much pain and resentment following the season’s turning point moment and the addition of Shiv’s crumbling marriage allows Snook to really sink her teeth into the character’s turmoil. Her balcony argument this season with Matthew MacFadyen’s Tom Wambsgans is a series highlight.

Best Screenplay –

“Forks”, written by Alex Russell – The Bear

“Beyond the Sea”, written by Charlie Brooker – Black Mirror

“Long, Long Time”, written by Craig Mazin – The Last of Us WINNER

“Connor’s Wedding”, written by Jesse Armstrong – Succession

“Sunflowers”, written by Brendan Hunt – Ted Lasso

It was very hard to pick between “Long, Long Time”, “Forks” and “Connor’s Wedding” for this category, but the former just edges it for being able to introduce new characters and make one of the most beautiful love stories I’ve seen on TV in just an hour. Of course Murray Bartlett and Nick Offerman’s performances do a lot to make it as special as it is, but even the dialogue and pacing alone on paper was the perfect foundation.

Best Director –

“wow”, directed by Bill Hader – Barry

“Fishes”, directed by Christopher Storer – The Bear

“When You’re Lost in the Darkness”, directed by Craig Mazin – The Last of Us

“Escape From Shit Mountain”, directed by Rian Johnson – Poker Face

“Connor’s Wedding”, directed by Mark Mylod – Succession WINNER

“Connor’s Wedding” though is what I consider to be the best TV episode of this year and it being lightly edged for the screenplay honour does not diminish it in any way. The episode is shocking and emotionally bare and shows us a side of these characters that we had never seen before then. While the screenplay is also fantastic, Mark Mylod’s direction creates the real sense of unease and emotional frailty that really makes the episode.

Best TV Show –

Barry

The Bear

Blue Eye Samurai

Captains of the World

Fargo

Jury Duty

The Last of Us

Poker Face

Succession WINNER

Ted Lasso

In what was a fantastic year for TV, Succession’s final season still stands head and shoulders above the rest. A towering achievement that beats every previous year of the show, and while I don’t quite think of the whole package as highly as some do, the final season is an undeniable modern classic and will be remembered for years to come as one of *the* great final seasons of a television show. Every show nominated here is great in its own right, but this was a fairly easy choice.

This is exactly what I’d have picked, except screenplay as I haven’t seen the others and Connor’s Wedding is epic
